Wedding Day First Look: What is it and is it right for us?

We often get asked if a wedding day first look is worth it or right for our couples. We are always happy to point out what we feel are the advantages to a first look, but ultimately it is a personal choice and you are the only one who can say if it is the right choice for you and your partner. To help with your decision we are talking about the advantages of a first look and why we feel they are great from a photographers perspective.

What is a wedding day first look?

A wedding day first look is a time set aside before your wedding ceremony for the couple to see one another for the first time. Traditionally in the past the first time you would see one another was at the aisle, however, in recent years a chance to see one another before the ceremony and take some photographs has grown in popularity.

What are the advantages of a first look?

There are so many advantages to a first look! This time together will be one of the few quiet times you have together all day. It will allow you to enjoy the surprise of seeing one another all dressed up and let's you share your reaction and thoughts in a more open manner than when you are at the wedding alter surrounded by your guests. It can help to diminish any nerves you may have and help you feel more calm walking into your ceremony.

How can a first look help my wedding photography?

From a photography perspective we find that couples who choose to share a first look end up with more portraits of the two of them together.

Normally the wedding day would start at your ceremony and afterward you would have a small time frame to complete your family and bridal party portraits so that you’re not late to your reception and dinner. With a first look, your wedding portraits are less rushed and feel a lot more fun! With alot of photos already done ahead of the ceremony most couples are able to attend part of or all of their cocktail hour and enjoy this part of the day with their families and guests.

Overall, we are definitely fans of the first look on a wedding day. We love the emotional and intimate images that are created during this time with our couples. We have heard from couples how happy they were with their decision to have their first look and that they felt it was one of the few times all day that they were alone and able to really connect. If you are on the fence about whether to do this on your own wedding day then we hope that the information in this post will help you to know if it will be right for you.
