Parkes Family Portraits - Battlefield Park - Hamilton Family Photographer
Photographing families is always a lot of fun! We like to put an emphasis on candid photos while still capturing a few nice posed shots for those looking for that perfect wall portrait. This also helps when young kids are present, you can’t ask them to stand still and smile for the camera for too long. Letting them run and documenting their personalities and excitement creates equally meaningful portraits.
We encourage families to bring items along that will show a bit about who they are. Mike and Danielle brought matching Toronto Blue Jays gear to wear. For anyone who knows them this one hundred percent is authentically them. They are a baseball family, travelling to see their favourite teams play, the boys play and participate in skills camps, and they have had some neat experiences specifically through the Blue Jays hosted skills camp. They have made a lot of memories around baseball so we love that the photos help to remind them of those stories and share so much about them.
For any families thinking about having family portraits done some things to consider are:
Wardrobe- this can be so stressful! But it doesn’t need to be. Stick with solids or subtle patterns and select a colour scheme that you know you already have in your wardrobe. Maybe you want greys and blues, or reds and creams. One neutral and one pop of colour always looks nice.
Location- if you have a place that is very meaningful to your family you may want photos done there. Ideas can be somewhere you spend a lot of time at or often go for a walk to, maybe even your own home. If nothing comes to mind then your photographer can help with options that they know will have nice lighting and beautiful backdrops.
Kids Behaviour- if you are bringing young kids then chances are you are stressed about how they will behave and whether they will delay the portrait session. Don’t be! A real professional knows how to work with kids and will have their own tips and tricks to ensure the shoot is a success. We always remind parents in the moment to stay smiling and looking at the camera, let us get the kids attention. This way when they look we have a beautiful photo of the whole family smiling. We take cues from the kids and when we think they need it we let them play and run and capture those great candid moments.
